H.O.R.S.E is a form of poker which is popular in the high stakes poker tournament circuit, and at high stakes tables in casinos and also on different brands such as 888 Poker . H.O.R.S.E became well known to the poker playing public when it was added to the World Series of Poker event list in 2002.
The first H.O.R.S.E event at the World Series of Poke had a buy in of just $2000. The inaugural event was won by John Hennigan, who took home a $117,000 prize for his efforts.
In more recent times the H.O.R.S.E event at the World Series of Poker has had its buy-in increased to $50,000, making it one of the richest and most prestigious events at the tournament. The prizes offered are now in the millions, rather than the hundreds of thousands.
The H.O.R.S.E tournament consists of five different card games, which are cycled throughout the event. The poker styles featured in the event are:
- # Texas Hold’em
- # Omaha Eight or Better
- # Razz Poker
- # Seven Card Stud
- # Seven Card Stud Eight or Better
H.O.R.S.E is popular among skilled UK POKER players because it tests the player’s skills across several different game types, and also tests their ability to adapt to rapidly changing play conditions.
The $50,000 H.O.R.S.E event for the World Series of Poker has been from the tournament list for 2010. It has been replaced by a $50,000 Poker Player’s Championship, which will feature eight games instead of five. The games included in the list are:
- # 2-7 Triple Draw
- # Texas Hold’em
- # Omaha Eight or Better
- # Razz Poker
- # Stud Poker
- # Stud Eight or Better
- # No Limit Hold’em
- # Pot Limit Omaha
The final table of the tournament will be a No Limit Hold’em event.
There will still be a standard H.O.R.S.E ruleset tournament at the World Series of Poker, however the buy-in has been reduced to $10,000. The winner of the Player’s Championship event will be given the Chip Reese Memorial Trophy.
